Mask tool: place an element behind a subject

The mask tool cuts an element so part of it disappears behind a person or object already in the image, instead of sitting flatly on top of everything. This is what makes a composite read as natural rather than pasted on.

1. Add the element as a layer

Place the logo, object or PNG on the image first, positioned roughly where it needs to end up, the same way as in Integrate an element.

2. Select what it should go behind

Pick the subject or object in the image that should occlude part of the element, for example a hand, an arm, or a piece of furniture in front of it.

3. Apply the mask

Run the mask tool. It cuts the part of the element that overlaps the selected subject, so that subject now appears in front of the element instead of the element sitting on top of it.

4. Check the result

Look closely at the edge where the element meets the subject; it should read as one element passing behind the other, not as two flat layers. Regenerate that zone with Inpainting if the edge needs cleaning up.
